A Perth man in financial strife murdered his mother because he wanted access to her life insurance policy, prosecutors have alleged. Andre Rebelo, 27, faced the Supreme Court in Perth on Thursday ahead of his seven-week trial in October on a charge of killing Colleen Rebelo in May 2020. Her body was found at her home in the riverside suburb of Bicton, and it was not until two years later that her son was charged. Mr Rebelo is also facing five counts of forging records. He denies all the allegations against him. Colleen Rebelo was found dead at her home in the Perth suburb of Bicton, but the court heard the cause has not been ascertained. ( Supplied: LinkedIn ) Prosecutor Brett Tooker has revealed that much of the evidence at the trial would be about Mr Rebelo’s financial situation at the time, which he described as “very poor”. He said it would be alleged the motive for the murder was to get access to his mother’s life insurance policy. Mr Tooker said initially the case was not considered suspicious and while a scene assessment was done at the time, little forensic evidence was collected. He said the cause of Ms Rebelo’s death could not be ascertained. The court heard evidence was still being gathered in preparation for the trial, including further details of Mr Rebelo’s financial position, phone records and mobile phone data. Mr Rebelo’s jury trial had been set down for five weeks, but Mr Tooker said it was now expected the case would go for seven weeks and run until early December.
