An Adelaide nightclub that offered patrons free drinks based on their bra size in a social media ad has been fined by South Australia’s consumer watchdog. Key points SA’s Consumer and Business Services fined the nightclub $3,897 for breaches of two codes The Liquor and Gambling Commissioner said the promotions were against the General Code of Practice The nightclub was also criticised for its lack of CCTV coverage which has since been upgraded In June, Adelaide CBD venue Woolshed on Hindley encouraged patrons in a Facebook post to take their bras off in exchange for free drinks . “Wearing a bra is so uncomfortable, hang it up in the shed and let loose,” the post stated in June, while offering one, two or three free drinks based on whether patrons use A, B or C cup bras. “The bigger the better,” the post stated. “That means you as well boys.” The promotion attracted backlash from some social media users, who at the time described the post as “misogynistic”. Woolshed on Hindley subsequently apologised for the social media post and cancelled the promotional activity. South Australia’s Consumer and Business Services CBS fined the nightclub $3,897, including a Victims of Crime levy, for breaches of the General Code of Practice and Late Night Code of Practice following an investigation. The business apologised for the post after community backlash. Imogen Hayne Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Dini Soulio said the business also had “inadequate” CCTV coverage, which is a requirement of the Late Night Code of Practice. “Gender-based promotions “ including those that objectify people ” are not only out of line with community expectations, but are in breach of this code,” Mr Soulio said about the ad. “Theme nights and other promotions can be a great way for licensed venues to attract customers, but there must be appropriate standards.” Mr Soulio said the business has since upgraded its CCTV coverage following the watchdog’s investigation and it had been inspected by CBS inspectors.
