The “Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes” (Fine Art Museum) contains fourteen exhibition rooms, which hold works dating from the 16th to the 20th century. The building has a classic design and was built at the beginning of 1929 by the architect Eladio Laredo. The outside of the building is decorated with 10 busts of distinguished people from Tenerife, the most outstanding of which include: Teobaldo Power (musician and composer), Ángel Guimerá (poet and playwright), Juan de Iriarte (grammarian and writer), Antonio de Viana (poet), Villalba Hervás (historian), Bethencourt y Molina (engineer) and Valentín Sanz (painter).

The first objects to be kept and preserved here were the flags won in 1797 in the battle against Nelson. In 1840 the Town Hall ordered them to be preserved in a special place: this initiative was the beginning of the museum. In 1933 the current building was refurbished to be used as an exhibition space

A project promoted by the Cabildo of Tenerife (Tenerife’s Island Government), is the work of architects Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron and Virgilio Gutiérrez. In this new, cultural building covering 20,622 square metres there is the Óscar Domínguez Institute; the Island of Tenerife’s Photographic Centre and a library, part of the island’s library network. This is a truly innovative idea, not only for Tenerife but also for the whole of the Canary Islands, as this cultural infrastructure has no precedent in the Archipelago. It has a definite contemporary vocation and aims to bring together the art generated by new technological changes in our society.

It is located in the renovated historical centre of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the right-hand side of the Barranco de Santos, between the Recova Market and the Concepción Church, next to the Museum of Natural History and Man. Its design favours openness to the outside for its interior areas, providing light and dynamism to the whole complex with its 1200 glass blocks with 720 different shapes and sizes. The centre also has various common areas: an events hall, shop, cafeteria, a semi-covered plaza and two exhibition halls. In one, there is the permanent exhibition of Óscar Domínguez and in the other a temporary exhibition.

Exhibition Centre of the San Cristobal Castle Ruins

In June 2006, during the renovation works on the Plaza de España in the island’s capital Santa Cruz, remains of the San Cristóbal Castle were discovered, up until then only remembered by the name of the nearby popular Castle Street.

The exhibition has been developed by the Tenerife Museum of History and Anthropology, and it contains the historical record of the castle dating from its construction back in 1575 until its demolition in 1928.

The centre also explains the defensive system that Tenerife had. Not only are there the castles of Santa Cruz –San Cristóbal, San Juan and Paso Alto- but also others spread around the rest of the Island. Some of which are still standing today, such as the San Felipe Castle in Puerto de la Cruz or the San Miguel one in Garachico.
