The number of people out of work in the Canary Islands rose by 7,400 in the third quarter of this year to stand at 378,200, more than 33.6 per cent of the working population.
The dire figures were revealed in the latest survey from the National Statistics Institute (INE), showing the islands second only to Andalusia, (35.42 per cent), and eight percentage points above the national average of 25 per cent unemployment.
Compared to the same period in 2011 unemployment has grown in the archipelago by 49,500, more than 15 per cent, which experts say is a result of a more than 4 per cent net loss of jobs.
The period has also seen an increase in population and, more importantly, an increase in the potential workforce of more than 12,200 chasing ever-fewer jobs.
