Despite the European economic crisis, Spain welcomed six million foreign visitors during the month of June, a 4.7 per cent increase on the same period last year.
According to the latest government data, the figures are the best for more than three years, driven, in part, by an upsurge in the British and German markets.
The latest figures make a welcome addition to the total for the first half of this year, which show foreign tourist numbers up by 2.9 per cent overall on last year.
The Canary Islands fared well in June, seeing a 4.8 per cent increase in visitor numbers, slightly above the national average.
