Thousands of people marched through the streets of Madrid yesterday in protest at government plans to raise Spain’s state retirement age from 65 to 67, while similar demonstrations were carried out in cities across Spain.
The union organised demonstration was led by the Secretary General of the CC.OO Union, Ignacio Fernandez Toxo and his UGT counterpart, Cándido Méndez, who were joined by politicians and celebrities.
Many of the demonstrators carried placards demanding instead more protection for the more than 4 million unemployed, while others called for a general strike against the socialist government’s plans.
There is a strong feeling of betrayal among the rank and file union members, who brought the socialists to power in a wave of anti-Partido Popular sentiment following the Madrid train bombings.
