Fire Damage At Monte Chasogo

Javier Ortiz Gonzalez, Minister of Economy, Finance and Security of the Canary Islands ordered the lowering of the level of severity of the fire affecting Tenerife from 2 to 1 yesterday, so from this point on, fire-fighting efforts and communication to the public are now the responsibility of the Tenerife Cabildo.

Estimates put the damage caused during the five days the forest fire raged over the mountain areas of Tenerife at  5,200 hectares (one hectare is the size of a football pitch), affected and 1,000 hectares completely burnt, of which 500 hectares of trees, mainly Canarian Pine.

Gonzalez Ortiz,thanked the professionalism and labours of all who contributed to bringing the forest fire which started last Sunday under control.

Specifically mentioned were  the Tenerife Cabildo BRIFOR and CECOPIN staff, local police from  the various unicipalities affected, with their councils, the Guardia Civil, voluntary associations, Civil Protection, Red Cross, AEA and other NGOs, Volunteer firefighters and the Consortium de Tenerife, the Military Emergency Government Office, the Ministry of the Environment, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Maritime authorities, and  Canarian Government personnel mobilised during the fire: SUC, CECOES 1-1-2, GES,  Canarian Police and all those private companies and institutions who contributed their resources .

Finally, the Minister specifically recognised  the huge sacrifice and contribution given by the residents of affected areas and those who had to flee their homes and thanked them all for their patience and understanding.
