Tenerife A Step Closer To Funding

December 19, 2012

After a great deal of lobbying, the Transport Committee of the European Union has finally approved amendments, which will mean the inclusion of the port of Santa Cruz and Tenerife’s south airport in the Trans-European Transport Network.

The latest move will give the island access to EU funding aimed at improving communication and transport infrastructure.

The news came yesterday following several anxious months during which, politicians and others have fought long and hard for Tenerife’s inclusion in the grand scheme, which, initially, only included facilities in Gran Canaria.

Yesterday’s decision will now go before the European Parliament for final approval, a decision which will be taken early next year and brings Tenerife a step closer to benefitting from a share of up to 50 billion euros targeted at improving communication and transport links across the EU.
