This Saturday September 17 Adrián Luis, Diego Ceres and Eduardo Rodríguez will be attempting the 40 km swim from San Sebastian in La Gomera to Playa de la Arena on the west coast of Tenerife.
One of the swimmers, Adrian Louis, works as a trainer at the Pancracio Socas García sports complex swimming pool in Puerto de Santiago, so is well equipped to take on the 10 hour challenge.
The stretch has been conquered previously. In September 2001 Spanish World Championship Gold Medallist David Meca Medina made the crossing in 8 hours, swimming amongst the whales that make these particular waters so attractive to tourists on whale and dolphin watching excursions.
This is a particularly difficult stretch of water to cross as the strong currents significantly affect the rhythm of the swimmers’ strokes, but all three local boys are convinced they will succeed.
