Surveillance Stepped Up As Risk Of Fire Continues

August 30, 2012

The proliferation of forest fires across the Canary Islands this summer has made an increase in surveillance a priority for law enforcement officers.

Members of the new Canarian Police force have been given the responsibility of patrolling the forested areas and ensuring that the public comply with the emergency rules put in place as the long, hot, dry, summer continues.

Due to the tinder-dry conditions, authorities across the islands have placed a ban on barbeques and the burning of farm stubble, among other measures, in an attempt to reduce the risk of fire.

As a result, officers have been randomly stopping and searching vehicles headed for the forested areas.
