Proposed Scheme Will Allow Those With Private Means To Puchase State Health Cover

August 8, 2012

The Spanish NHS announced in a press release yesterday that it proposes to establish agreements to enable those who are neither employed, self employed, pensioners or  beneficiaries of those categories of persons, to make contributions to purchase public health care in Spain.

The exact way these agreements will work is being discussed with the various Autonomous Communities,but in principal the scheme is aimed at the following groups;

  • § Spanish nationals who have never worked and have revenues in excess of 100,000 euros a year (annuitants)
  • § Europeans who volunteer to sign these agreements in order to be attended by the Spanish public health system.
  • § Third-country nationals during their stay in Spain, who want to formalize an agreement to be attended by the public system.

The charges will be in line with the official methodology for calculating the cost of health care for citizens,  the same method which is applied for billing for health care provided to citizens of other European countries.

In any case, as established by Royal Decree-Law 16/2012, all citizens regardless of their situation are guaranteed basic assistance: emergency illness or accident, pregnancy care, childbirth and post-partum care for children under 18.
