The Union of Canarian Communication Professions (UPCC) has complained about the direct control the Canary Coalition (CC) party now has over public television and radio broadcasting, after learning of the appointment last weekend of Rubén Fontes the Production head of TV Canaria , as secretary of the CC in Gran Canaria.
The UPCC said in a statement that Fontes is just “one more example” of private interest at work in Canary Islands Public Television. “The public service broadcaster behaves like it is at the service of the CC” said the union spokesperson, who went on “The Canarian Broadcasting Service (RTVC) has become a medium that can no longer hide who controls it. The current management team should resign or be dismissed”
Equally critical was the Popular Party (PP), whose spokesman on Communication, parliament deputy Victor Moreno, said “Fontes’ appointment is an unprecedented scandal for TV Canaria.”
Moreno went further and suggested “the President of the Canarian Government, Paulino Rivero, should take action on the matter because Regional Television has become a permanent propaganda service for the CC “
