The body of a woman, believed to be in her 40s, was recovered by an Air Sea Rescue helicopter off the coast of Playa Benijo, in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife yesterday.
Emergency services were alerted at around 2.40 pm by an off-duty coastguard officer, who happened to be surfing in the area at the time.
The, as yet, unidentified woman was floating some 50 m from shore when rescuers arrived.
Police say the victim was wearing a red shirt, light-coloured pants and white shoes and, judging by the state of the corpse, could have been in the water for two day or more.
