Mammogram Mystery

September 24, 2012

More than 60 per cent of women, aged 50 or more, in the Canary Islands are failing to take advantage of regular mammograms, despite being aware of the risks.

Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of La Laguna, Norberto Batista, said that early detection of a tumour resulted in an 85 per cent chance of a complete recovery.

Professor Batista said women over 50 should have a mammogram every year, stressing that catching the disease in its early stages means the tumour is smaller, easier to remove and far less likely to reappear.
