Going Round In Circles – Ring Road Funding On Again

September 3, 2012

The Canary Islands government have now officially agreed to provide the budget necessary to complete the stretch of island ring road between Armeñime and Santiago del Teide.

The works, which had been put on hold,  will likely be completed by the original deadline of December next year.

This will co-inside with the opening of the route between Icod and El Tanque.

According to Tenerife Cabildo Highways Councilor , José Luis Delgado, due to funding cuts the Cabildo did not have the money to complete the project , “It makes no sense not to finish a project that has had over 150 million euros invested in it and which is so necessary to the residents of South Tenerife,” said Delgado.

The Councillor stressed that the Cabildo has been working to get the funding commitment from the Canarian Government for this section. He went on to say that a 40 minutes journey will be cut to under 15 minutes, which will improve not only the safety of drivers, but the family welfare of many residents who will use this highway to get to their workplace.

However there are some drawbacks, the main section will be completed,  but some additional links to other population centres, as is the case of Fonsalía and will be left for later.
