Just two short weeks ago the islands’ and world’s press were full of reports on the terrible forest fires taking place in Tenerife, admittedly the worst is past, but the fire which has been burning in the mountains of Tágara since July 16 is still burning today.
The Tágara ravine is located in a remote area of Guia de Isora county and what still burns are mostly large pine trees, which can be up to thirty feet high.
According to the Guia councillor responsible for Local Development, Hector Gomez, the inaccessible location makes it impossible to smother the flames completely either from the air or on the ground.
There are members of the Cabildo’s forest-fire-brigade (Brifor) monitoring the situation. “They tell us there is no choice but to wait for it to burn itself out, but the fact is that we are losing pines of great importance and there is still an active fire. We simply can not yet quantify the acres of pine forest and vegetation that have burned, the mountain area of Chasogo has been reduced to ashes, reforestation will be very hard” says Gomez.
