The Canary Islands welcomed 821,969 foreign visitors in July, down by 11,000, or 1.4 per cent, over the same period last year.
To make matters worse, the latest government figures for July in the Canary Islands contrast sharply with those for the whole of Spain where visitor numbers were up by 4.4 per cent to a record 7.7 million compared to last year.
The Institute of Tourism Studies (Frontur), responsible for the study, said that, apart from April, July stood out as the only month this year in which foreign visitor numbers had not shown gains on 2011
However, foreign visitor numbers for the year to date are up slightly over 2011, which is no mean feat considering last year broke all records for the number of foreign visitors to the islands, topping 12 million.

It’s no surprise numbers are down, just take a look at the price of air fares from the UK. £300/£400 one way!!!
I think the numbers are a fiddle anyway. I am sure that they are using the number of cruise liner passengers in their figures. If you look at Tenerife Airport passenger numbers, they are down to date, yet the number of tourists are supposed to be up over they year. Something does not add up!
