Cruise Ship Remains In La Palma Pending Investigation

February 12, 2013

Contrary to earlier reports, the cruise ship “Thomson Majesty” remained docked in the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma on Monday, pending the arrival two inspectors who will continue with the investigation into the accident that killed five crew members on Sunday.

The inspection will be carried out jointly by the Spanish authorities and a specialist from Malta, where the ship is registered.

Sources from the port authority confirmed that the ship’s departure for Madeira had been put on hold until the conclusion of the accident investigation.

Five crew members died and three more were injured after a routine lifeboat drill went tragically wrong when the cables, used to lower the lifeboat, failed, sending the craft plunging 20m to the sea below.
