Hi we have been visiting Lanzarote now for last few years, and have made many friends, one of which was the lovely barmen "Tommy" from The Golden Corner, our family lost contact with him on the 6 Nov 2011. We only learned that he sadly passed away in a accident, drowning of Faro de Pechniguera (refer to your report dated 8 Nov 2011). Basically I'm looking for more news as to what happened and if his funeral was in Lanzarote etc. We couldnt even think of visiting Lanzarote without having know what happened and where he might be laid to rest. Our thoughts are with those he loved. Please can any one enlighten us.
Regards

I was in Santa Cruz the other week and filled up at one of the petrol stations with 95 octane. It was 5 cents a litre cheaper than here in the South/West. Can Mr Arteaga explain why this is the case?

Canary Islands tourist boosts 2011 don't mean more employment, unfortunately. Travel package deals get shorter and cheaper. Obviously this is only possible by cuts in other fields which means hotels in this case. I heard some complaints in this respect by intelligent people, even. Such tourists should also be reasonable. Just look what has happened to Tenerife hotels which didn't operate on a shoe string budget. You get what you pay is the rule of the market. Luck is involved only in rare cases. Perhaps, the situation will change when no more minimum wages are set. Who wouldn't work for any amount instead of having his or her children starve to death?

I don't know where the Spanish get their figures from, maybe Alice in Wonderland, as you reported that unemployment in the Canaries is up by quite a large amount. So, unemployment up and tourism up! Something definitely does not add up.

The problem with tables and chairs etc cluttering the pavement can only be the restriction it imposes on pedestrians, actually the outside sitting culture is a nice one (you need good weather) I would much rather sit outside with a coffee watching the world go by that be stuck inside - like we often have to do in the UK. One problem area is down by the harbour - most, if not all bars have tables and chairs immediately outside their establishments, then another set of tables and chairs at the edge of the pavement, (by the cars) - this leaves a very narrow space for pedestrians particularly if you have a pushchair, its made all the worse when you consider when the tables are in use the person sitting on the chair has to move it away from the table to be able to sit !! - I would favour the abolishment of the chairs and tables immediately outside the bars and just have the pavement edge tables and chairs
