Calima Warning

February 5, 2013

The yellow alert issued by the Met. Office yesterday, warning of severe Calima conditions remains in force today with conditions worsening across the Canary Islands.

As a result, the Ministry of Healthy has advised people to avoid prolonged periods of strenuous outdoor activity and warned those at risk, suffering from respiratory problems, children and the elderly, to remain indoors where possible.

This Calima, a wind which draws up fine particles of dust and sand from the Sahara desert and carries them over the islands, is said to be particularly severe, having been found to exceed the recommended daily limit for airborne particulate matter, which is set at 50 micrograms per cubic metre.
