The Marine Rescue Service has released its latest figures, which reveal that close to 3,000 people were rescued from the seas off the Spanish coast this summer.
In all, the rescue services responded to 1,046 incidents, 51 of them in the Canary Islands and all involving pleasure craft.
A spokesman said almost all were due to either mechanical failure or some structural default with the vessel and that many could have been avoided.
