Bank Holiday Weekend Flights Chaos.

October 15, 2012

Troubled local airline, Islas Airways, cancelled 28 of its planned 86 flights in the Canary Islands on Sunday, representing more than 32 per cent of its operations.

The situation came about because of an on-going dispute with the company’s staff, with union representatives claiming some workers, including pilots, have not been paid for three months.

A company spokesman, Jose Daniel Diaz, acknowledged there were serious problems but put the blame squarely onto government which, he said, had withheld 12 million euros due to the airline in payment for the 50 per cent residents travel subsidy.
