Fiestas del Carmen - Puerto de la Cruz 16th July

Although the festivities in honour of the Virgin of Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen, is celebrated in many districts in Tenerife, the most famous celebration is held in Puerto de la Cruz. Every year in this tourist resort in the north of Tenerife, local people carry the statue of the Virgin together with one of Saint Telmo from their chapel to the small beach in the fishing harbour. This procession is a major event and carried out with great enthusiasm by the local people, who are always keen to share the great atmosphere with visitors. Once at the beach, and after releasing doves, the fishermen put the statue on board a decorated boat and to the sound of the local brass band and the horns of other boats the statue sails along the coast. This fiesta ends with a great firework display in the fishing harbour; then the Virgin of Carmen and Saint Telmo are taken back to their sanctuary.
