Summer Solstice: FIESTAS DE SAN JUAN 2009 - Puerto de la Cruz
23 & 24 June

Tuesday 23 June

21:40 hrs. Lighting of the Bonfire.
21:50 hrs. Fireworks display by ”Sky Productions”.
22:15 hrs. Performance by Magec.
23:15 hrs. Pyro-musical display.
23:20 hrs. Dancing to “Los Salvapantallas”.

Wednesday 24 June from 8am.

This fiesta is held on the fishing docks, among crowds of locals and tourists. Everyone sets up camp on the Playa del Charcón and the Playa del Muelle, waiting for the sun to come up, in order to witness the famous “baño de las cabras” (goat dipping) at around 8 am. The exact origins of the fiesta are lost in the mists of time but it may be in memory of a ceremony held by the Guanches (Tenerife’s indiginous inhabitants) to celebrate the summer solstice. Goat herds offer cheese and milk to all and sundry, many take a dip and everyone sees in San Juan’s day with dancing.
