Corpus Christi - Sand Carpets 15 -18 June 2009: La Orotava

The town of La Orotava is famous  for its Corpus Christi sand carpets, an artistic tradition more than one hundred years old.

This year, the main carpet in the Town Hall square measures 870 square meters and is made from twelve different coloured volcanic sands.

But the beautiful display is fleeting for on June 18, as the relegious procession passes over the carpets, this spectacular work is destroyed.
