Refreshing News For Beer Drinkers
Drinking beer in moderation can actually help keep you hydrated, according to a new study by a group of Spanish scientists.
After years believing that alcohol contributes to dehydration, we’re now being told that beer, which is 95 per cent water anyway, can help replace fluids lost on a hot summer’s day.
Not only that, say the boffins, but beer also provides us with essential vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, especially folic acid, as well as minerals such as potassium and magnesium.
All this good news for beer lovers comes in a report from a scientific committee set up to study diet and headed up by Dr. Jesus Roman Martinez.
The report is well timed coming as the Canary Islands swelter in 36C temperatures and we are constantly being warned of the dangers of not drinking enough fluids to avoid dehydration.
According to Martinez and his dietetic committee, the human body needs around 30-35ml of water for every kilo of body weight a day, which averages out at around 2-2.5 litres of water for the average person.
However, (sorry guys), most of that should be taken as plain old water, with other drinks, such as tea or beer, used to add a little variety.
