    Police bust massive postal scam

Officers from the National police fraud squad have arrested 87 Nigerians, accused of running a lottery scam, involving millions of Euros.

The scam involved hundreds of thousands of potential victims being sent a letter telling them they had won first prize in a lottery. The victims were told that in order to claim their prize, they would have to send money, ranging from €900 to €9,000, to cover administration fees.

Police raided 39 addresses in Madrid and surrounding towns, seizing 60,000 letters, 200 computers and a large quantity of forged postage stamps.

Despite police claims that the scam could have netted around €170 million, so far they have only received complaints from 1,200 people, claiming to have lost around €20 million.
