Pension Age Hike - Thousands Protest In The Canaries

Around 1,500 people took to the streets of Tenerife’s capital, Santa Cruz, yesterday to protest against government proposals to up the state retirement age from 65 to 67.

A similar number also turned out for the union-backed protests in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, according to the organisers and the police.

Secretary General of the UGT union, Juan Francisco Fonte, said the unions would never accept a change in the retirement age imposed by the government.

He described the move as “inopportune” and warned that it could seriously affect the Pact enjoyed between the unions and the Socialist Government.
