Fire in Grantecan’s La Laguna Offices

A fire destroyed part of the La Laguna offices of the Gran Telescopio de Canarias organisation (Grantecan) on Saturday Morning.

With workers off for the weekend, luckily no one was injured in the  blaze which began a little after 11 am.

Forensic officers will be investigating the cause of the fire, but initial reports point to an electrical fault.

The Gran Telescopio de Canarias  is a 10.4 metre telescope located in one of the top astronomical sites in the Northern Hemisphere: the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma.

Grantecan is a Spanish initiative lead by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. The project is actively supported by the Spanish Government and the Canary Islands Government through the European Fund for Regional Development.
