Canaries Health Workers To Strike Friday
More than 16,000 public health workers in the Canary Islands are being asked to come out on strike this coming Friday, December 18.
Unions and health professionals are demanding that the regional government reverse the decision to cut the islands’ health budget for next year by 2.5 per cent.
President of the Professional Union of Doctors of Las Palmas, Isidro Rexachs, criticised the government for cutting health budgets at a time when demand was increasing and health workers were finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with demand.
Rexachs said that despite the economic downturn, essential services should be maintained and not cut to balance the books.
Union officials were keen to point out that emergency services would be maintained.
