Canary Islands Come Bottom In Sports Spending
The Canary Islands spend less on sporting facilities and promotion than anywhere else in Spain.
The islands come bottom of the class when it comes to encouraging participation and investing in sport, according to the latest figures published in the sports magazine Deportistas.
The Canaries spend just 5.66 Euros per head of population on sport, which compares miserably with Navarre, which spends a whopping 52.49 Euros per head on sport, ten times as much as the Canaries.
To make matters worse, the report claims that as a result of the economic belt-tightening being carried out across Spain, sports budgets have been cut this year by an averageĀ of 2.5 per cent.
Figures from the report show that, of the total budget of the Canary Islands, just over 11.7 million Euros, (0.16 per cent), is destined to go towards the development and practice of sport, the lowest in all of Spain.
