Tenerife’s Ring Road - Latest Gran Prix Circuit?
Barring further delays the section of Tenerife’s new ring road from Adeje to Santiago del Teide will be finished by October 2011.
The schedule was announced amid news that the flyover at the Adeje roundabout, which will connect the motorway with the road to Guia de Isora, is on track to be finished sometime next month.
The much-anticipated flyover should go a long way to relieving congestion and long tailbacks at the notorious bottleneck at the Adeje roundabout.
The new road will be dual carriageway between the roundabout and Guia de Isora and from there, a much improved single carriageway road on to Santiago del Teide.
Another vast improvement to the west coast’s long-neglected infrastructure will be the construction of a spur from the new Guia road.
This will connect the dual carriageway to Fonsalia, between Playa San Juan and Alcalá, which should cut the journey time to the west of the island, greatly improving access to Tenerife’s west coast towns.
At some point in the future, the ring road will be completed with the road being extended from Santiago, north, to eventually connect to the TF-5.
While it is true that the new road will undoubtedly cut journey times, it would seem that the Canary Islands’ Minister for Public Works, Juan Ramón Hernández, got a little carried away with himself at the press conference, according to a report in the respected newspaper, La Opinion.
Enthusing about the importance of the new roads, Sr. Hernández said that the journey time for the 28km run from Santiago del Teide to the Adeje roundabout, would be cut from the present 35 minutes to just 10 minutes.
Hmmm…That would suggest that either Sr. Hernández has a Formula 1 racing car, or he is encouraging the public to break the speed limit by a factor of two.
Lets see…28km divided by 10 minutes = 2.8km per minute x 60 minutes in an hour = 168km per hour.
Bad enough if he said it, worse if La Opinion printed it without question.
On the other hand, perhaps they realized his blunder and printed it anyway, just for devilment.

Good news anyway for those of us living in the Playa de la Arena area … but I was hoping this item was going to announce the construction of a real F1 circuit on the island … like I predicted in my TENERIFE TALL TALES volume no.1.

Sorry to disappoint Tony.
However, I would think the idea of driving from Adeje to Santiago del Teide in 10 minutes is a pretty tall tale, probably worthy of Baron Munchausen himself.
In fact, come to think about it, the journey could probably only be done in that time by riding on a cannonball anyway!
