Trafico Clampdown On Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Today sees the start of a publicity and awareness campaign by Trafico on the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving.

According to Trafico, the risks of having an accident are comparable to drink-driving and the campaign, which lasts until November 22, will involve the monitoring of some 600,000 drivers across the country.

Running in parallel to the proposed clampdown will be a TV and Radio advertising campaign, aimed at showing the increased dangers posed by using a phone while driving, even when using a hands-free set up.

A spokesman said there was a misconception among the public that using a hands-free phone in the car was safe.

However, research has shown that using even a hands-free phone, a driver sees 40 per cent fewer road signs and their reaction time is increased, all contributing to the greater likelihood of an accident.

Firstly. In recent months I’ve seen Policia Local, Policia National and Guardia Civil all driving and using mobiles. Even saw Policia Local on motor cycles in pedestrian areas of Los Cristianos riding using mobiles.
Guess they should get there act together first

      Couldn’t agree more Michael.
But can you beat seeing a local policeman doing a U-turn on the brow of a hill on a busy main road with a solid white line down the middle, while using a mobile phone and steering with one hand?
Better still, the policemen who parked half on a zebra crossing and half on double yellow lines, then got out of the squad car and started writing out tickets for the cars parked illegally on the very same double yellow lines.
      I think it’s a clear case of “Don’t do as I do…Do as I say”
Anymore stories about policemen not keeping to the laws they impose?
