January saw unemployment in the Canary Islands increase by a further 8,414, up more than three per cent compared to December of last year.

It is, no doubt, small comfort to know the figure for the islands is well below the national average, with the number of people out of work across Spain increasing by around four per cent over the same period.

According to the latest figures from the Department of Social Security, the number of people out of work across the country increased by more than 177,400, with increases being seen across all the autonomous communities.

Despite the increase in visitor numbers, last year saw the number of unemployed in the islands up by more than 15,600, an increase of more than 6 per cent.

That would suggest the modest increase in the number of people employed in the hotel sector was more than offset by job losses in other parts of the economy.

However, the jobles total in the islands remains well below the national average where the jobless total rose by an average 8.72 per cent.
