A couple are to appear in the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife today charged with murder.
The couple were arrested last year following the death of their niece, who the couple had welcomed into their home with her new born son.
Soon afterwards the couple, who were themselves childless and unable to have children of their own, began to physically and mentally abuse their niece, holding her a virtual prisoner, unable to leave the family home in Güímar.
The prosecution claim repeated systematic beatings from the couple, and their failure to allow the victim to receive medical treatment for her injuries, led to the young woman’s death.
The couple face a jury today charged with murder, abuse and illegal detention and, if found guilty, are expected to be facing a 20-year prison term.
