Officials at Madrid’s annual tourist trade fair, (FITUR), say they expect the recent upturn in visitor numbers to the Canary Islands to continue into this summer and beyond.
Last year saw a record-breaking 12 million plus visitors to the islands, 10.5 million of them foreigners.
Speaking at the event’s inauguration yesterday, president of the Canary Islands’ government, Paulino Rivero, said the islands will see a rise in German and British visitors this summer, with numbers up by 10 per cent and six per cent respectively and described the news as “encouraging.”
The fair was opened by the prince of Asturias who visited the Canary Islands Pavilion, showing particular interest in the situation on the island of El Hierro following the recent and on-going volcanic activity.
