Rogue taxi drivers

March 1, 2008

Taxi drivers in Tenerife are up in arms over illegally operated taxi services offered over the Internet, in direct competition with drivers in Arona. The web sites offer pick up and drop off to the South airport from across the island and rides to golf courses.

Taxi drivers have reported the illegal trade to the local authorities and the Tenerife Cabildo’s Transport Department are investigating.Arona councillor for Transport, Antonio Miguel Garcia Marichal has passed information about four web pages to the Cabildo who have the power to fine the illegal operators who are operating without a licence. Apart from being totally illegal, some operators are ripping off tourists, charging as much as €38 from the airport to Los Cristianos and more than €112 to Los Gigantes. The illegal taxi services tempt clients with promises of avoiding long taxi queues by booking their service in advance and by offering minibuses for groups of more than four people.

Meanwhile, taxi drivers in Arona and Granadilla have met with council leaders in an attempt to get them to take action against the rogue operators. In the meantime, Arona Council has already committed local police officers to investigate and charge the offenders.
